Caste based voting plays a role , but NOT when activists have sound proposals , or the leader they support is PROVEN non-casteist / non-nepotist .
.
eg NaMo's caste is ghanchi which is not even 1% in Gujarat. NaMo proved to all in BJP , RSS , general public that NaMo isnt casteist and nepotist. So NaMo in Gujarat got support from all castes. Less from some caste, more from some caste. But NaMo got support across castes.
.
But in Bihar, NaMo was NOT going to be CM. And BJP had no proposals / plans , except "vikas , vikas" drumbeating. And most BJP leaders in Bihar are casteist and nepotic. So the fear , that BJP will appoint some casteist leader as CM became real. So most voters went back to caste based voting.

.
As saying goes "mices will play ONLY when cat is away". If there is NON-CASTEIST and NON-NEPOTIC proposals / leaders, then caste becomes lesser issue. In absence of NON-CASTEIST leaders / regime , voters will pay attention to caste.
