Thomas Jefferson, USA's 2nd President in 1810 had said --- Those who read nothing , are more informed than those who only read newspapers !!
And these days, I meet three types of people ---
(A) LESS_READ : those who read no newspapers dont listen to speeches of intellectuals
(B) MEDIA_FED : those who read textbooks, newspapers, columns of eminent intellectuals, TV-channels etc , but do not take news and views from commons on internet
(C) INTERNET_FED : those who do take news and views from commons on internet , and may or may not be reading textbooks, newspapers, columns of eminent intellectuals, TV-channels
The worst informed people are MEDIA_FED !! Strangely, MediaFed are far worse than LessRead !!
Let me give one example from few months back, after I gave anti-Bangaldeshi ad in Gujarat Samachar in 12-jan-2012. I met a LessRead person, and he said that "yes, we must do something to expel Bangladeshies". I asked how one can differentiate from illegal Bangladeshies from Indian Bengali muslims, and he admitted he was clueless. I explained some of the methods, and he partially agreed.
And I met some 2nd year LLB students who read newspaper and magazines, but never took news from internet. They had NO idea that there are lakhs and perhaps over crore Bangladeshies in India !! And what way did they give to identify illegal Bangladeshi immigrants? They suggested "easy !!! check their passports, and if visa has expired , then their status is illegal "!!! This is what you hear from someone who did 12th class, did B Com and is in 2nd year LLB !!! And he had been active in many NGOs as well !!
So what Thomas Jefferson said in 1810 is more true today. The paid-textbook-writers and paid-mediamen have been systematically blocking information on vital topics of politics, military and economics. Those who read none of their paid work get information from "word on street" and that does carry vital information on information topics. Those who get political news and views from internet have more information. But a big chunk gets information solely from textbooks, newspapers, TV-channels only and they are all hopelessly under informed.

Solution I propose
Pls see chap-10 of http://rahulmehta.com/
1. Short term --- activists should shell out their own hard earned post tax money and give front page ad in mainstream newspaper. eg I have given some 20 ads on RTR so far.
2. Long term - Right to Recall Doordarshan chairman, give each State Govt a channel, split DD into 5 parts with each company having recallable chairman, Jury System over DD staff etc etc.
