Digital India --- hype , plus points and minus points

Since 1980s , across world, across India, all Govts have been adding software , hardware , network, telephone interface etc to reduce man hours to do tasks, improve speeds, reduce costs etc. Govt of India and Govt of States too have been adding software , hardware , network etc since 1980s. eg in 1985, we saw computerization of Railway Reservation System. And then in 1991, we saw Deemat System in share market and then computerization in banks and so on. And in 2000s we saw increase in mobile telephony.

Now all these projects inside Central and ALL State Govts will get label of "Digital India" !! IOW, big part of Digital India is is only relabelling.

But next big portion of Digital India is different --- it is allowing FB , google, amazon etc provide internet service such as 2G , 3G, wireline etc to some 85% population of India !! FB etc will provide service to over 100 crore Indians for free. And in return, the services will be truncated --- i.e. users can see only websites such FB , amazon or website which pay FB etc.

In India, as of now, bottom 85% population doesnt have 2G , 3G or wireline at their homes. Bottom 80% has no internet link at all, except may be some free wifi access they may be getting here and there.

So how can we make internet available to all?
.
(1) One solution is to improve BSNL so that 2G prices, wireline service fall to an extent that even poorest can afford ot. And also improve quality of BSNL. And in addition, print law-drafts DDMRCAM which will reduce poverty. And print law-drafts such wealth tax , JurySys , RTR etc will reduce inefficiency of factory owners and thise increase manufacturing , reduce unemployment and increase incomes of the poor. And this will enable them to buy whatever bandwiidth they want.

(2) And another solution is ---- ask videshi telcos, FB etc to provide free bandwidth to bottom 85% population !!! .

As far as bear term economic benefits go, (2) has its own "merits". After all someone is giving something for free, not taking it away. eg whats wrong if missionary gives free food, free medicine and free education to all the poor? Well, poor will indeed be better served. And political influence of missionaries will rise. So whats the problem?

I have discussed missionary issue in other status posts, and I wont discuss it here. Lets come back to NaMo's proposal of allowing FB, videshi telco , amazon etc to give free bandwidth to bottom 85% of India .

The possible problem is --- increasing political influence of FB etc in India. FB's newsfeed is NOT neutral. FB decides which posts will come first, which posts will come later, and which posts wont come at all in your newsfeed. And that can be used to create new leaders and break existing leaders. So FB has access to newsfeed of over 60 crore Indian voters, then FB will have sizeable say in "who will be next PM of India" and so FB can use that to force PM to carry out agenda of owners / sponsors of FB.

FB may be one company. But like all huge US companies, it has several owners and several sponsors. One of the biggest sponsors of FB has been US Govt and CIA.

Most SoMoKe-andhbhagats dismiss rising influence of FB as "conspiracy theory" !!! And if that is so, then there is nothing wrong in FB and assorted US companies gives free internet access to 50 crore to 100 crore Indians.

So finally, one has to decide on his own. Almost every SoMoKe-supporters, every CoBhAp-worker, every RSS-workers, every BST-worker is openly supporting decision of SoMoKe to allow US telcos and FB to create freebasics . com aka internet . org . Many , such as we at RRG , oppose SoMoKe's decision to allow FB to give freebasics . com etc etc

But all who oppose freebasics are NOT same. First, in short run freebasics . com aka internet . org is coming. Because SoMoKe are NOT in position to stop freebasics . Why not? Because FB is in position to promote anti-reservation leaders in Gujarat and across India and ensure that CoBhAp either loses most of its forward caste voters or loses all OBC / Sc / ST voters !! How? FB can raise reservation issue to a point that BJP will have to take a stand , or silence of CoBhAp will make CoBhAp unpopular in all forward castes. And if CoBhAp oppose reservation, then CoBhAp will lose Sc / ST / OBC voters. This is one weapon FB has. FB has several ways to dislodge SoMoKe / CoBhAp. So SoMoKe and each and every CoBhAp-leaders will support freebasics . com aka internet . org. They dont have choice.

So what options those who oppose increasing political influence of MNC-owners in India have?

Many so called nationalists, oppose law-drafts like DDMRCAM , wealth tax, JurySys, RTR etc. IMO, without these laws , poverty cant reduce. And without these laws, bottom 70% will never have money to buy bandwidth. And so freebasics . com etc will remain popular them. And given that SoMoKe support freebasicscom, there is no stopping. So IMO, the nationalists, such as RSS-workers, who oppose DDMRCAM , JurySys, RTR, wealth tax etc will remain ineffective. So IMO, activists , such as CoBhApSwaRa-workers , who support net neutrality, but avoid questions like "what law-drafts do you propose to reduce poverty" , are wasting time.

The solution I propose is that activists should publicize law-drafts such as DDMRCAM, TCP, RTR, JurySys, wealth tax and also net neutrality law-draft. But please note --- beating drum on net neutrality, in absence of DDMRCAM, wealth tax etc is waste of time. With billion poor citizens, net neutrality isnt viable at all, I repeat ---- With billion poor citizens, net neutrality isnt viable at all,

So summing up, a big portion of Digital India is to

(1) re-label all ongoing software, hardware , network, telco etc addition as Digital India, so that all credit goes to NaMo. As if NaMo invented silicon chip in India !!

I dont oppose (1) per se. All tall leaders across world, across India, across time have spent more time in grabbing credit for other's work than creating new work. So (1) is politics as usual. Even if we replace NaMo by someone else, they will do same.

But (2) is serious. And IMO, solutions are reduce poverty and improve BSNL. There are NO shortcuts,
