Today is Saragarhi day. On this day in 1897, 21 Sikhs held off 5000-10000 afghans, for the whole day. Of the 21, two were cooks and one communication operator. All 21 voted to fight till death, rather than surrender. They killed 180-450 attackers and wounded thousands. The blow-by-blow events were communicated by the Heliograph operator to the nearby fort. His last message was asking for permission to fight, as all his comrades were dead.
